In knitting, there are only two stitches: knit and purl. Everything else is just a combination or manipulation of these two stitches.
Here is the knit stitch.

1. Insert Right Hand Needle (RHN) into the stitch on the Left Hand Needle (LHN) from front to back:

2. Bring yarn (the strand going back to the ball) around the back of the RHN: |

3. Bring the yarn through by pushing with the RHN |

4. Now slide stitch off the LHN onto the RHN |
